We are narrating some Ayahs and Ahadiths regarding the munafiqeen, we should examine ourselves in its light and correct ourselves and remove those characteristics which are or resemble with the characteristics of the munafiqeen.
Of the people there are some who say: "We believe in Allah and the Last Day;" but they do not (really) believe.
[Soorah Baqara, Ayah 8]
And when it is said to them, do not make mischief in the land, they say: We are but peace-makers.
[Soorah Baqara, Ayah 11]
Of a surety, they are the ones who make mischief, but they realise (it) not.
[Soorah Baqara, Ayah 12]
And when it is said to them: Believe as the people believe they say: Shall we believe as the fools believe? Now surely they themselves are the fools, but they do not know.
[Soorah Baqara, Ayah 13]
And when they meet those who believe, they say: We believe; and when they are alone with their Shaitans, they say: Surely we are with you, we were only mocking.
[Soorah Baqara, Ayah 14]
Their parable is like the parable of one who kindled a fire but when it had illumined all around him, Allah took away their light, and left them in utter darkness-- they do not see.
[Soorah Baqara, Ayah 17]
Deaf, dumb (and) blind, so they will not turn back.
[Soorah Baqara, Ayah 18]
Or like abundant rain from the cloud in which is utter darkness and thunder and lightning; they put their fingers into their ears because of the thunder peal, for fear of death, and Allah encompasses the unbelievers.
[Soorah Baqara, Ayah 19]
The lightning almost takes away their sight; whenever it shines on them they walk in it, and when it becomes dark to them they stand still; and if Allah had pleased He would certainly have taken away their hearing and their sight; surely Allah has power over all things.
[Soorah Baqara, Ayah 20]
Have you not seen those who assert that they believe in what has been revealed to you and what was revealed before you? They desire to summon one another to the judgment of the taghoot, though they were commanded to deny him, and the Shaitan desires to lead them astray
into a remote error.
[Soorah Nisa, Ayah 60]
And when it is said to them: Come to what Allah has revealed and to the Messenger, you will see the hypocrites turning away from you with (utter) aversion.
[Soorah Nisa, Ayah 61]
But how will it be when misfortune befalls them on account of what their hands have sent before? Then they will come to you swearing by Allah: We did not desire (anything) but good and concord.
[Soorah Nisa, Ayah 62]
And if we had prescribed for them: Lay down your lives or go forth from your homes, they would not have done it except a few of them; and if they had done what they were admonished, it would have certainly been better for them and best in strengthening (them).
[Soorah Nisa, Ayah 66]
And they say: Obedience. But when they go out from your presence, a party of them decide by night upon doing otherwise than what you say; and Allah writes down what they decide by night, therefore turn aside from them and trust in Allah, and Allah is sufficient as a protector.
[Soorah Nisa, Ayah 81]
And they say: We believe in Allah and in the messenger and we obey; then a party of them turn back after this, and these are not believers.
[Soorah Noor, Ayah 47]
And when they are called to Allah and His Messenger that he may judge between them, lo! a party of them turn aside.
[Soorah Noor, Ayah 48]
And if the truth be on their side, they come to him quickly, obedient.
[Soorah Noor, Ayah 49]
When the Hypocrites come to thee, they say, "We bear witness that thou art indeed the Messenger of Allah." Yea, Allah knoweth that thou art indeed His Messenger, and Allah beareth witness that the Hypocrites are indeed liars.
[Soorah Munafiqoon, Ayah 1]
They have made their oaths a screen (for their misdeeds): thus they obstruct (men) from the Path of Allah: truly evil are their deeds.
[Soorah Munafiqoon, Ayah 2]
When thou lookest at them, their exteriors please thee; and when they speak, thou listenest to their words. They are as (worthless as hollow) pieces of timber propped up, (unable to stand on their own). They think that every cry is against them. They are the enemies; so beware of them. The curse of Allah be on them! How are they deluded (away from the Truth)
[Soorah Munafiqoon, Ayah 4]
And when it is said to them, "Come, the Messenger of Allah will pray for your forgiveness", they turn aside their heads, and thou wouldst see them turning away their faces in arrogance.
[Soorah Munafiqoon, Ayah 5]
They are the ones who say, "Spend nothing on those who are with Allah's Messenger, to the end that they may disperse (and quit Medina)." But to Allah belong the treasures of the heavens and the earth; but the Hypocrites understand not
[Soorah Munafiqoon, Ayah 7]
They say, "If we return to Medina, surely the more honourable (element) will expel there from the meaner." But honour belongs to Allah and His Messenger, and to the Believers; but the Hypocrites know not.
[Soorah Munafiqoon, Ayah 8]
Zaid b. Arqam reported: We set out on a journey along with Allah's Messenger (SallAllah-u-Alaihe-Wa-Sallam) in which we faced many hardships. 'Abdullah b. Ubayy said to his friends: Do not give what you have in your possession to those who are with Allah's Messenger (SallAllah-u-Alaihe-Wa-Sallam) until they desert him. Zubair said:
That is the reciting of that person who recited as min haulahu (from around him) and the other reciting is man haulahia (who are around him). And in this case when we would return to Medina the honorable would drive out the meaner there from (lxiv. 8). I came to Allah's
Messenger (SallAllah-u-Alaihe-Wa-Sallam) and informed him about that and he sent someone to 'Abdullah b. Ubayy and he asked him whether he had said that or not. He took an oath to the fact that he had not done that and told that it was Zaid who had stated a lie to Allah's
Messenger (SallAllah-u-Alaihe-Wa-Sallam). Zaid said: I was much perturbed because of this until this verse was revealed attesting my truth:" When the hypocrites come" (lxiii. 1). Allah's Messenger (SallAllah-u-Alaihe-Wa-Sallam) then called them in order to seek forgiveness for them, but they turned away their heads as if they were hooks of wood fixed in the wall (lxiii. 4), and they were in fact apparently good-looking persons.
[Sahih Muslim: Book 038, Number 6677]
Narrated Muhammad bin Zaid bin Abdullah bin 'Omar: Some people said to Ibn 'Omar, "When we enter upon our rulers we say in their praise what is contrary to what we say when we leave them." Ibn 'Omar said, "We used to consider this as hypocrisy."
[Sahih Bukhari: Volume 9, Book 89, Number 289]
Narrated Abu Huraira:Allah's Messengers said: "The worst of all mankind is the double-faced
one, who comes to some people with one countenance and to others, with another countenance."
[Sahih Bukhari: Volume 9, Book 89, Number 290]
Narrated 'Abdullah bin 'Amr:
The Prophet said, "Whoever has the following four (characteristics) will be a pure hypocrite and whoever has one of the following fourcharacteristics will have one characteristic of hypocrisy unless and until he gives it up.
1. Whenever he is entrusted, he betrays.
2. Whenever he speaks, he tells a lie.
3. Whenever he makes a covenant, he proves treacherous.
4. Whenever he quarrels, he behaves in a very imprudent, evil and
insulting manner."
[Sahih Bukhari: Volume 1, Book 2, Number 33]
It is reported on the authority of Abu Huraira that the Messenger of Allah (SallAllah-u-Alaihe-Wa-Sallam) said: Three are the signs of a hypocrite: when he spoke he told a lie, when he made a promise he breaks it, when he was trusted he betrayed.
[Sahih Muslim Book 001, Number 0112]
It is reported on the authority of Abu Huraira that the Messenger of Allah (SallAllah-u-Alaihe-Wa-Sallam) made observations like them embodied in the hadith narrated by Yahya b. Muhammad on the authority of 'Ala', and added to it: even if he observed fast and prayed and asserted that he was a Muslim.
[Sahih Muslim Book 001, Number 0115]
It is reported on the authority of Anas that the Messenger of Allah (SallAllah-u-Alaihe-Wa-Sallam) observed: The sign of a hypocrite is the hatred against the Ansar and the sign of a believer is the love for the Ansar.
[Sahih Muslim: Book 001, Number 0136]
Abu Sa'id Khudri reported that during the lifetime of Allah's Messenger (SallAllah-u-Alaihe-Wa-Sallam) the hypocrites behaved in this way that when Allah's Messenger (SallAllah-u-Alaihe-Wa-Sallam) set out for a battle, they kept themselves behind, and they became happy that they had managed to sit in the house contrary to (the act
of) Allah's Messenger (SallAllah-u-Alaihe-Wa-Sallam), and when Allah's Messenger (may SallAllah-u-Alaihe-Wa-Sallam) came back, they put forward excuses and took oath and wished that people should laud them for the deeds which they had not done. It was on this occasion that
this verse was revealed:" Think not that those who exult in what they have done, and love to be praised for what they have not done-think not them to be safe from the chastisement; and for them is a painful chastisement" (iii. 18).
[Sahih Muslim: Book 038, Number 6686]
Ibn Omar reported Allah's Messenger (SallAllah-u-Alaihe-Wa-Sallam) as saying: The similitude of a hypocrite is that of a sheep which roams aimlessly between two flocks. She goes to one at one time and to the other at another time.
[Sahih Muslim: Book 038, Number 6696]
Ibn Omar reported Allah's Messenger (SallAllah-u-Alaihe-Wa-Sallam)
saying like this but with this change of words:" She sometimes finds a way in one flock and then in another flock."
[Sahih Muslim Book 038, Number 6697]
It has been narrated on the authority of Abu Huraira that the Messenger of Allah (SallAllah-u-Alaihe-Wa-Sallam) said: One who died but did not fight in the way of Allah nor did he express any desire (or determination) for Jihad died the death of a hypocrite.
[Sahih Muslim: Book 020, Number 4696]
The only reasons why their contributions are not accepted are: that they reject Allah and His Messenger; that they come to prayer without earnestness; and that they offer contributions unwillingly.
[Soorah Taubah, Ayah 54]
They swear by Allah that they are indeed of you; but they are not of you: yet they are afraid.
[Soorah Taubah, Ayah 56]
If they could find a place to flee to, or caves, or a place of concealment, they would turn straightaway thereto, with an obstinate rush.
[Soorah Taubah, Ayah 57]
And among them are men who slander thee in the matter of (the distribution of) the alms: if they are given part thereof, they are pleased, but if not, behold! they are indignant
[Soorah Taubah, Ayah 58]
Among them are men who molest the Prophet and say, "He is (all) ear." Say, "He listens to what is best for you: he believes in Allah, has faith in the Believers, and is a Mercy to those of you who believe." But those who molest the Messenger will have a grievous penalty.
[Soorah Taubah, Ayah 61]
The Hypocrites are afraid lest a Soorah should be sent down about them, showing them what is (really passing) in their hearts. Say: "Mock ye! But verily Allah will bring to light all that ye fear
(should be revealed).
[Soorah Taubah, Ayah 64]
The Hypocrites, men and women, (have an understanding) with each other: They enjoin evil, and forbid what is just, and are close with their hands. They have forgotten Allah; so He hath forgotten them. Verily the Hypocrites are rebellious and perverse
[Soorah Taubah, Ayah 67]
They swear by Allah that they said nothing (evil), but indeed they uttered blasphemy, and they did it after accepting Islam; and they meditated a plot which they were unable to carry out: this revenge of theirs was (their) only return for the bounty with which Allah and His
Messenger had enriched them! If they repent, it will be best for them; but if they turn back (to their evil ways), Allah will punish them with a grievous penalty in this life and in the Hereafter: They shall have none on earth to protect or help them.
[Soorah Taubah, Ayah 74]
Those who slander such of the believers as give themselves freely to (deeds of) charity, as well as such as can find nothing to give except the fruits of their labour,- and throw ridicule on them,- Allah will throw back their ridicule on them: and they shall have a grievouspenalty
[Soorah Taubah, Ayah 79]
Those who were left behind (in the Tabuk expedition) rejoiced in their inaction behind the back of the Messenger of Allah: they hated to strive and fight, with their goods and their persons, in the cause of Allah: they said, "Go not forth in the heat." Say, "The fire of Hell is fiercer in heat." If only they could understand!
[Soorah Taubah, Ayah 81]
Zaid b. Thabit reported that Allah's Prophet (SallAllah-u-Alaihe-Wa- Sallam) set out for Uhud. Some of those persons who were with them came back. The Companions of Allah's Prophet (SallAllah-u-Alaihe-Wa- Sallam) were divided in two groups. One group said: We would kill
them, and the other one said: No, this should not be done, and it was on this occasion that this verse was revealed:" Why should you, then, be two parties in relation to hypocrites?" (iv. 88).
[Sahih Muslim: Book 038, Number 6684]
Abu Huraira reported Allah's Messenger (SallAllah-u-Alaihe-Wa-Sallam) as saying: The most burdensome prayers for the hypocrites are the night prayer and the morning prayer.
[Sahih Muslim: Book 004, Number 1370]
Abdullah (b. Mas'ud) reported: He who likes to meet Allah tomorrow as Muslim, he should persevere in observing these prayers, when a call is announced for them, for Allah has laid down for your Prophet the paths of right guidance, and these (prayers) are among the paths of right
guidance. If you were to pray in your houses as this man why stays away (from the masjid) prays in his house, you would abandon the practice of your Prophet, and if you were to abandon the practice of your Prophet, you would go astray. No man purifies himself, doing it
well, then makes for one of those masjids without Allah recording a blessing for him for every step he takes raising him a degree for it, and effacing a sin from him for it. I have seen the time when no one stayed away from it, except a hypocrite, who was well known for his hypocrisy, whereas a man would be brought swaying (due to weakness) between two men till he was set up in a row.
[Sahih Muslim: Book 004, Number 1376]
Narrated Muhammad bin Zaid bin Abdullah bin 'Omar: Some people said to Ibn 'Omar, "When we enter upon our rulers we say in their praise what is contrary to what we say when we leave them." Ibn 'Omar said, "We used to consider this as hypocrisy."
